Born in Redwood City, CA, Dr. Garrido spent a part of his youth on a Naval Base in Rota, Spain. There, at a young age, he fell in love with the sport of soccer. Coming back to the United States as a young teen, he would excel at the sport. He was invited to try out for the Olympic team. Unfortunately, nagging knee injuries prevented him from pursuing his passion.
Currently, Dr. Garrido resides in Danville, CA and is helping to raise his 2 kids with his wife Cindy, who is an elementary school teacher in Castro Valley. His interests include anything health related, meditation, hiking, weight lifting, internet marketing, and spending time with his family. But as an undercurrent to his life, he has a profound story that ultimately turned him into the Chiropractor that he is today.
Here’s his story from his own words…
Confessions are tough. Real tough. But, before I get into my confession, let me say a few other things first.
Let me start by explaining the photo in this post. I’ve used this photo in the past, and I’ve been actually stopped a couple of times and people have said, “Hey, you look familiar… Oh yeah, you’re Dr. Garrido, and you had that ad out with those 2 cute kids.” Well the 2 cute kids are my niece and nephew. My name is Johannes Garrido, and i’m the guy in the middle with my lucky “Poppy Hills” red golf hat on.
Years ago something happened to me that changed my life forever. Let me tell you my story.
I had heard of people having seizures before, and thought nothing of it, until that one fateful day… I remember walking down the hall in middle school all by myself. Suddenly a cloud of numbness overcame me. I fell to the ground, and started shaking uncontrollably. I was in the midst of my first seizure. After my first bout, I kept it quiet. I didn’t tell my friends or family. I was embarrassed. In fact, I was downright scared. A week had gone by and it didn’t happen again, so I thought I was safe. Boy was I wrong!
A week later, I was at an air show. There were hundreds, if not thousands of people there. I remember, going to buy a hot dog, when I felt that familiar cloud of numbness hit, like it did the week before. I fell to ground, loss all control of my body, and again started violently and uncontrollably shaking.
My mother and father panicked. With tears down their eyes, they rushed me to the hospital and I underwent an exhaustive battery of tests and procedures to determine just what was wrong with me.
After MRIs, Cat-Scans, EEGs, Blood Work, and a number of other tests, they determined that I was healthy… at least physically. The MDs said that since I was fine physically, I must be making it up. So, they sent me to a Psychiatrist… of course.
The Psychiatrist said I had “been making it up in my head… a product of a psycho-somatic disorder.” After considering mind altering drugs (that was the only option, according to them), my family and I decided against it. I was playing very high level soccer at the time and the drugs would interfere with my performance. So we decided not to take any.
Fast forward 10 years of suffering, and countless seizures. After doing some research, I went to see a Chiropractor. He did an exam, checked my posture, and then ‘adjusted’ my spine. After just one adjustment, I’ve been seizure free ever since. It was then that I decided to devote my life to Chiropractic.
It’s strange how life is, because now people come to see me with their seizures.
Also they come to me with their headaches, migraines, chronic pain, neck pain, shoulder/ arm pain, whiplash from car accidents, backaches, ear infections, asthma, allergies, numbness, just to name a few.
