How can I make my horse’s hair grow back?

Question by Kyle: How can I make my horse’s hair grow back?
I took in a gelding, 7 years old, and he has what the vet deemed a “cosmetic injury” a year or so ago with the old owners. He is sound, nothing is wrong with him, but the scar does not grow hair back. It is about a half a foot long x an inch or two wide. Everyone who looks at it thinks it’s really bad because the dirt sticks to it, but it really is not bad at all once you get closer because you can see it’s only dirt on skin. What can I do, if anything, to get this hair to grow back? It is in the middle of a white sock so growing back white will obviously not bother me, but what is the best to use? M-T-G? Bacon grease? Ideas please!

It sounds like there’s a good bit of scar tissue. A wide scar like may not ever grow hair back.

  1. I’ve used M-T-G on my horses tons of times and it really works! My horse had rain rot before I got him and it cleared that up and he had bite marks that were pretty bad and the M-T-G cleared it all up too. I highly recommend it if the wound is ready for it.

  2. Try some neosporen.

  3. m-t-g really works well on tails and manes, so it would probably work fine on the scar. I would say put it on twice a day if you have the time and it will grow back quicker. read the back for instructions. go online for reviews

  4. It will probably never regrow hair. You could try MTG or A&D cream, but I doubt it’s gonna come back. If the previous owners had taken better care of it, to insure that there was little to no granulation tissue and that it was properly stitched/ wrapped it might have come back or at least left a smaller scar.

My QH has a similar story, where we had to remove a large flap of skin from a hind leg. It healed well, though, and resulted in a very minor scar. You can see it here: http://i157.photobucket.com/albums/t50/IheartRyanbucket/animals%20and%20horses/l_f74be9af885f024c2f53e2ae8500db07.jpg on his far back leg. His was irreparable via stitching, so we just had to keep it wrapped and let the skin grow back over itself. It needed de-briding twice or three times, and then it was good to go.

  5. Nothing will MAKE hair grow back on a scar, they do sell a colored spray that you can spray on it like before shows and stuff that will help it be a little less noticeable. Don’t worry about what other people think… Unless you want your horse to smell funny and be covered in flys I would not put bacon grease on him… lol bad idea… Also, typically if a horse does get a cut and years later the hair does grow back, it’s usually the opposite color… like if it is on a white area the hair will probably grow back black, if it’s on a dark area it will grow back white… if it does grow back at all. If it really bothers your get some colorfull polo wraps or sport boots. Just make sure you know how to use them the right way and the wound is healed really well. One last note, MTG is good on areas there are still hair follicles like for rain rot, rubbing, etc. An injury that has taken off the top couple layers of skin does not have any hair follicles left so this is not going to make them come back…

  6. If it’s an old scar….hair will not grow back.

For new injuries you can use Schreiners Herbal Solution.

MTG massaged into the skin may help the scar soften and the surrounding hair to grow thicker to cover it up.

Like someone suggested, you could cover it up. Using baby powder/desitin/horse paint..etc when riding so no one sees if it bothers you that much.
