Question by Leoh87: I have recently noticed a movement, or sliding, sensation in my lower back. It started a week ago – ideas?
There wasn’t a specific “injury” or trauma to the area, although I’ve had somewhat significant issues with my back in the past. It’s not terribly painful, mostly uncomfortable – but it really freaks me out. It literally feels like my spine is sliding. I thought it may be muscle weakness, but I’ve tried several times to ‘test’ it and it’s definitely not involving muscles. Will it go away? If not should I go to a chiropractic office or an MD?

You could have displaced a disk in your spine, so I would definitely suggest seeing your doctor. You could go to a chiropractic after, but you might need some x-rays done first, just to determine what the problem (if there is one) is.

You should definately get imaging done first to establish exactly what is going on in your spine. Sometimes the sensations that we feel are not what we think is going on. I would imagine that slipping of vertebrae (although possible) would be far more painful and would involve other symptoms such as nerve irritation in your leg, as well as weakness.
Also, I have disc prolapses and you do not actually feel them “slipping”. In fact a disc prolapse used to be called a slipped disc despite the fact that it is not actually “slipped” at all. It is in fact the jelly like nucleus seeping through the outer shell into the spinal cavity behind. that presents with severe pain, loss of movement, stiffness and very often nerve pain (tingling, numbness, shooting pain – often called sciatica).
Either way, take it easy, ice your back if you can and get to the doctor ASAP. Good luck.
