Dispelling the Myths about Chiropractic Adjustments
In recent years, the medical establishment has gone to great lengths to undermine the public perception of Chiropractic treatment as a viable means to enhance one’s quality of life. As a consequence, a number of myths and misconceptions have been perpetuated. The goal of this article is to help dispel the myths surrounding Chiropractic treatment.
One such misconception is that Chiropractors are not real doctors. Alas, this could not be further from the truth. Chiropractors are required to graduate from a recognized school of Chiropractic as a doctor of Chiropractic, in addition to passing national and provincial exams to qualify for a license to practice. In the province of Ontario, a Chriopractor is one of few health professionals entitled to use the title “Doctor”.
Another myth about Chiropractic suggests that it is solely intended to diagnose and treat problems associated with back pain. Again, this is a false notion. A vertebral subluxation of the spine can have a profound impact on one’s overall health, manifesting in a wide variety of ailments beyond mere back pain. A properly-aligned spine can have an immense impact on one’s general health. Most Chiropractors are of the belief that the human body has the innate ability to heal itself, and their role is to facilitate and stimulate the natural healing process through spinal manipulation and correction of vertebral subluxation.
Another false myth regarding Chiropractic is that there is no scientific proof that it works. There have been countless studies proving it’s validity, and it has improved the health of millions of people around the world. Recent studies have shown that Chiropractic adjustments have a positive impact on immune function, brain function, circulatory function, and overall wellbeing of the individual. Chiropractic is a well established health care practice that has been around for over 100 years. Additionally, Chiropractic is the largest form of drug-free health care in North America. Perhaps the greatest misconception regarding Chiropractic treatment is that it may cause a stroke or even death. The truth is that there is absolutely no scientific evidence to support such an idea. There have been a handful of stories in the press in recent years, in which Chiropractic treatment has been suggested as the cause of death of certain individuals. It’s unfortunate that journalists involved with producing stories such as these didn’t take the time to check their facts as opposed to publishing opinion as such. Odds are greater that you will be hit by lightning before being injured by a Chiropractic adjustment.
