Question by boxbeatle: What would cause a pain in my left hip, knee, and top of foot?
It all started when I took a job standing all day, I thought that I would be better when I left and found a sit down job. I had the stand up job for 6 months. After one month on the new job the pain is better, but it is still there. My knee was more swollen before. None of the pain is severe. The top of my foot gets a slight “pain” (for lack of a better description), and my knee has a slight pain. The hip thing just started, just a very slight pain. I loosen my shoe strings and it helps, but always comes around the worst mid-afternoon. What in the world could this all be?

Answer by Bradley R How are the shoes your are standing in all day? If they are not giving you proper support, that can cause pain in your knee and hip. You should look into a cheap pair of insoles, I’d recommend orthotics that give you a firm positioning with comfortable cushioning as well.
This COULD be sciatic nerve pain as well. My sciatic nerve pain runs down my leg from my hip to my knee and to my foot.
If the pain tingles, there is numbness or there is burning (or the general feeling its kind of asleep) then there is nerve involvement. If this is the case you could have a small disk herniation or something else slightly compressing your nerves, most likely closer to your back.
If the latter is the case, if it sounds like nerve pain, you should discuss this with a doctor. If it isn’t nerve pain, try insoles watch your posture at work. If it doesn’t improve, then you should also seek professional medical advice then as well.

A type of pain that is almost debilitating is neck and shoulder pain. In fact, it can incapacitate someone from doing work, or simple activities of daily living. From so many myths on the causes of this pain, it is almost impossible to point out which one is (medically) true. So who are the real culprits?
Definitely, stress can be the first culprit to be blamed. Over thinking and excessive worrying can take their toll on one’s healthy by manifesting as a persistent pain in the neck and shoulder. Another obvious cause of neck and shoulder pain is staying in one position on a prolonged time, such as countless hours in front of computer, or a whole day sitting behind your office desk. By holding a single position for quite a long time, the muscles in the neck and shoulder area are stiffened, and its fibers tightened. These may later cause the pain. Additionally, sleeping in an uncomfortable position may also cause neck and shoulder pain. Include also to the culprits of pain are the obvious injury and trauma to the neck area.
Neck and shoulder pain can also arise from more serious conditions. These conditions include injury to the muscles, ligaments and organs in the neck area. A fractured collarbone is one of these. Bursitis, or the inflammation of the sac that covers the muscles and the joints, can also cause pain in the neck and shoulder. A whiplash injury can also lead to severe excruciating pain. This is due to a sudden accelerating force in the neck and shoulder that left an injury or a tear in that area.
Tendonitis is also another underlying condition that may cause sore feeling in the neck and shoulder. Tendonitis is the inflammation, or a strain, in the tendons, which functionally connect muscles to the bones. Moreover, excessive sports activities that require lots of throwing and shoulder movements can lead to Rotator cuff Injuries. This kind of injury presents itself as a pain in the neck and the shoulder region.
Arthritis of the neck can also bring about some tenderness in the shoulder-neck area. Also called Cervical Spondylosis, neck arthritis is more common to older people. It happens when aging bones put pressure on the spinal cord. This can eventually lead to numb and weak feeling, and later on, pain.
Another more serious cause of this type of pain is a bulging vertebra that traps a nerve. And while it continuously impinges the nerve, after few months, the pain increases in intensity. There is also muscular rheumatism, or more popularly knows as Facet Syndrome. It is described as a crick in the neck. And unlike the entrapped nerve, muscular rheumatism is more acute and sudden.
Although it seems quite hard to achieve relief from neck and shoulder pain, one should always take the first step to get to a successful pain relief goal. And that first step is to know what causes the problem. It may be as simple as uncomfortable sleeping position or as threatening as nerve damage. No matter what it is, take the initiative to discover what causes the troubling pain. And from there, a pain-free neck and shoulder may no longer seem that too hard to achieve.

Joint Disorders Unraveled – 9 Risk Factors That Cause Joint Pain
You’ve probably heard it a hundred times, joint pain is merely the cause of aging and nothing else. This is a myth. In fact, joint disorders are caused by different factors all leading to pain and related stress.
Age is a huge factor in joint disorders because the cartilage thins as a person grows old. Joints are damaged faster as the surface of the cartilage changes from smooth to cracked. Nonetheless, this is not the only reason for the aches and pains one can suffer.
Many aspects cause joint disorder; here are the most common reasons.
1. Inflammation. Swelling of joints or arthritis as it’s more popularly known can be constant and recurrent. Inflammation causes pain and swelling due to tiny pieces of cartilage tearing off. A more common form of arthritis is called osteoarthritis. Often caused by the breakdown of cartilage, it targets the hips, hand, knees and spine. Although osteoarthritis is classified as a non-inflammatory arthritis (no swelling), swelling slowly appears as the arthritis develops.
2. Diet. Food intake plays a big role in life. The body needs nutrition for strength and energy. But not all foods are good for the body; some can also slowly degrade the body. The foods we eat are the results of what happens to our body. Eating unhealthy foods can take their toll in due time mostly resulting in illness caused by joint pain.
3. Weight. Weight is also one of the reasons for the aches and pains that we feel in our joints. Obesity causes small tears that break down the cartilage. Picture a chicken with a big body because of vitamins and excess food, their feet are so small that they can’t lift themselves up anymore. Same goes with a person, the more the weight they carry, the more the cartilage breaks down. It may seem unnoticeable at first, but the effects take place in the long run. It’s a known fact that losing a few pounds can relieve pain by at least 50 percent for most women.
4. Diabetes. Diabetes increases the risks of joint disorders. A frequent problem in having diabetes is Charcot’s joint. Mainly affecting the feet, it occurs due to nerve damage caused by joint deterioration.
5. No exercise. Lack of exercise is also a major factor in joint disorder. Joints, like the tinman in The Wizard of Oz, need oil or in this case nutrients and exercise. Tender joints that don’t get enough exercise will cause the surrounding muscles to become frail. Not only does exercise help strengthen joints, it also maintains weight loss and keeps the body healthy.
6. Muscle loss. Loss of muscle mass also contributes to joint pain. It’s only natural to lose some muscle mass as time passes by. This goes along with lack of exercise, the joint soaks up the stress of everyday living instead of the muscle resulting to more damage.
7. Stress. Stress due to over-exercise can also cause joint disorder. If the body is overstressed from excessive exercise, the muscles get strained ensuing damage to the joints.
8. Injuries. Small injuries that happened at a young age can lead to joint pain. Accidental sprains can be damaged further as a person grows older. Even minor unknown injuries can effect in joint disorders.
9. Heredity. Heredity can cause joint disorder because your parents may have passed it on to you. The position of the bones and the uneven fitting of the joints can be abnormal leading to disorders. Though some may skip this genetic disease; those who get it won’t experience this problem until they’re older.
Staying healthy and keeping fit will lead to a more dynamic and happy lifestyle. So eat right, have enough exercise and take care of your body. You never know, you may even outlive your cat.
