Cholesterol is a fat-like substance needed to help digest fats, strengthen cell membranes, make hormones and insulate nerves. Although it is found in every cell of the body, cholesterol is mainly made in the liver, as well as cells lining the small intestine. Even though our bodies make all the cholesterol we need, we also get cholesterol from the foods we eat, such as egg yolks and organ meats. All foods from animal sources contain cholesterol, while plant derived food, including peanut butter and avocado, contains no cholesterol at all.

There are two types of cholesterol found in our blood, and each has its own functions. Good cholesterol helps removal of bad cholesterol, which in fact is the reason for formation of blockages in arteries inside the heart. Thus there is need for us to maintain optimum levels of cholesterol, as otherwise we are likely to suffer from various diseases of the heart.
There are good and bad cholesterol. High density lipo-protein containing cholesterol removes bad cholesterol, which has lower density of lipo protein, which in fact causes arteries blockage. As the normal levels of cholesterol increases in the blood, we land in serious problems of heart.
Causes of Cholesterol
Hereditary:
Hypercholesterolaemia or increase in cholesterol is mainly a hereditary disorder.
Excessive consumption of rich foods:
It is also caused by taking rich foods and fried foods: excessive consumption of milk and its products like clarified butter, butter, and cream; white flour, sugar, cakes, pastries, biscuits, cheese, and ice cream; and non-vegetarian foods like meat, fish, and eggs.
Smoking, Drinking and Stress:
Other causes of increase in cholesterol are irregularity in habits, smoking and drinking alcohol. Stress has also been found to be a major cause of increased level of cholesterol.
Symptoms of High Blood Cholesterol:
Following are the major high blood cholesterol symptoms:
1. General fatigue
2. Excess sweating and feel of uneasiness
3. Pain and heaviness in chest area
4. Breathlessness
Cholesterol Treatment
1. Do regular exercise in morning and evening both
2. Avoid meat products
3. Do not smoke and drink alcohol
4. Loose weight if obese
5. Include Roughage and fibrous food in diet
6. Use sunflower, or safflower oil for cooking
7. Drink plenty of water
Home Remedies for Cholesterol
1. Eat garlic frequently. It is an effective herbal remedy for lowering cholesterol
2. Take 3 grams of combination of giloye with black pepper powder two times a day. It is too an effectual herbal remedy for lowering cholesterol
3. Taking one tablespoon of honey is also fine for lowering cholesterol
4. Take guggulu for natural cholesterol lowering
5. Take one teaspoon of oil of the ishabgul seeds twice a day. It will assist in lowering blood cholesterol
