What Naturopathic Career Study Options are Available?

Health has become a large part of society, which has individuals focused on exercise and having a well-balanced diet. This has also increased the interest in natural healing methods from a variety of ailments. Students that want to study this area of medicine can complete a naturopathic degree program by learning natural healing methods.

The field of naturopathic study focuses on teaching students an all-inclusive approach to natural healing. Students can expect to learn about areas like acupuncture, massage therapy, nutrition, herbology, exercise, and more. In terms of career study options students predominantly can enter education at the certificate and doctoral level. This gap is due to the fact that students that want to enter this field need to have a doctorate to practice naturopathic medicine. Students have many educational options at the undergraduate level and master’s degree level to prepare them for doctoral study.

Educational Option One: Certificate Program

Completing a naturopathic certificate program is a great way for students to earn a foundational understanding of the entire industry. Many students use this level of education to determine whether or not completing a doctorate program is for them or if another area of natural healing fits their desired interests better. Students may find that one specific area such as acupuncture is more appealing. Programs approximately last one-year. Common courses include:

Kinesiology
Hydrotherapy
Acupuncture
Anatomy

Students can expect to examine diet, exercise, holistic health, and much more. Entering the professional field with a certificate allows students to work in nutrition, healthcare, and other health related industries. To gain the full career potential in naturopathy, students should continue education until they complete a doctorate degree program.

Educational Option Two: Doctoral Degree

Students that complete a Doctor of Naturopathic Medicine degree program learn the holistic approach to health. The industry centers on the belief that each part of the body is connected to the whole person and doctors should address every part, which includes the body, mind, and spirit. The medical treatment of patients in a non-invasive way is explored in depth at this level of education. Both alternative and traditional medical courses are studied. Coursework specific to naturopathic studies can include:

Botanical Medicine
Oriental Medicine
Therapeutic Nutrition
Natural Childbirth

Programs are extensive in their scope of education in order to prepare students for careers. Schooling is set up on a four-year track but it is not uncommon for students to take five years to complete a program. The first year of alternative healing training focuses on teaching students the chemistry of the human body. The second year usually focuses on treating and diagnosing diseases. The third year of education explores the different organ systems and incorporates clinical training. The fourth year wraps up organ systems, training in holistic healing , and places a high importance on practicing medicine in a clinical setting. Students can step into many careers in fields that include acupuncture, massage therapy, health education, and more.

Naturopathic career study allows students to work with a variety of clients using several different natural healing methods. Students can enter a satisfying career in the holistic health field by completing naturopathic schooling. The Accrediting Commission of Career Schools and Colleges (ACCSC) can fully accredited colleges and degree programs that prepare students for successful occupations.

In June 2009 Gus, Anne, Cody and Genevieve are starting their 3 month, 6200km journey from Edmonton Alberta Canada, to Quetzaltenango, Guatemala. Their sole method of travel is the bicycle. They plan to travel between 60-80km per day rain or shine and all in the effort to raise money for a clinic at their final destination. The clinic “Primeros Pasos” is a free clinic to anyone under 18. They provide health care, medication, they have a dentist, a psychologist, and most importantly they focus on health education providing over 500 health education workshops every year. After the conception of the trip the group started a non profit and in 4 short months have already raised nearly half of the clinic’s annual budget. They will continue to raise funds for the clinic through donations, and are hoping to get sponsors per kilometer to increase the steaks. We are making a feature length documentary on the 4 travelers as they prepare to start the journey, make their way through mental and physical obstacles, travel across North America and into Central America, and finally reach their destination to give the clinic the funds it needs to continue it’s amazing work. Please visit their website to take in depth look at what the trip is. If you would like to donate to the clinic, give a per kilometer sponsorship, or help to fund the documentary we are planning to make about these 4 amazing individuals and the adventure they are about to set out on, you can contact the travelers
