What Naturopathic Career Study Options are Available?

Health has become a large part of society, which has individuals focused on exercise and having a well-balanced diet. This has also increased the interest in natural healing methods from a variety of ailments. Students that want to study this area of medicine can complete a naturopathic degree program by learning natural healing methods.

The field of naturopathic study focuses on teaching students an all-inclusive approach to natural healing. Students can expect to learn about areas like acupuncture, massage therapy, nutrition, herbology, exercise, and more. In terms of career study options students predominantly can enter education at the certificate and doctoral level. This gap is due to the fact that students that want to enter this field need to have a doctorate to practice naturopathic medicine. Students have many educational options at the undergraduate level and master’s degree level to prepare them for doctoral study.

Educational Option One: Certificate Program

Completing a naturopathic certificate program is a great way for students to earn a foundational understanding of the entire industry. Many students use this level of education to determine whether or not completing a doctorate program is for them or if another area of natural healing fits their desired interests better. Students may find that one specific area such as acupuncture is more appealing. Programs approximately last one-year. Common courses include:

Kinesiology
Hydrotherapy
Acupuncture
Anatomy

Students can expect to examine diet, exercise, holistic health, and much more. Entering the professional field with a certificate allows students to work in nutrition, healthcare, and other health related industries. To gain the full career potential in naturopathy, students should continue education until they complete a doctorate degree program.

Educational Option Two: Doctoral Degree

Students that complete a Doctor of Naturopathic Medicine degree program learn the holistic approach to health. The industry centers on the belief that each part of the body is connected to the whole person and doctors should address every part, which includes the body, mind, and spirit. The medical treatment of patients in a non-invasive way is explored in depth at this level of education. Both alternative and traditional medical courses are studied. Coursework specific to naturopathic studies can include:

Botanical Medicine
Oriental Medicine
Therapeutic Nutrition
Natural Childbirth

Programs are extensive in their scope of education in order to prepare students for careers. Schooling is set up on a four-year track but it is not uncommon for students to take five years to complete a program. The first year of alternative healing training focuses on teaching students the chemistry of the human body. The second year usually focuses on treating and diagnosing diseases. The third year of education explores the different organ systems and incorporates clinical training. The fourth year wraps up organ systems, training in holistic healing , and places a high importance on practicing medicine in a clinical setting. Students can step into many careers in fields that include acupuncture, massage therapy, health education, and more.

Naturopathic career study allows students to work with a variety of clients using several different natural healing methods. Students can enter a satisfying career in the holistic health field by completing naturopathic schooling. The Accrediting Commission of Career Schools and Colleges (ACCSC) can fully accredited colleges and degree programs that prepare students for successful occupations.

In June 2009 Gus, Anne, Cody and Genevieve are starting their 3 month, 6200km journey from Edmonton Alberta Canada, to Quetzaltenango, Guatemala. Their sole method of travel is the bicycle. They plan to travel between 60-80km per day rain or shine and all in the effort to raise money for a clinic at their final destination. The clinic “Primeros Pasos” is a free clinic to anyone under 18. They provide health care, medication, they have a dentist, a psychologist, and most importantly they focus on health education providing over 500 health education workshops every year. After the conception of the trip the group started a non profit and in 4 short months have already raised nearly half of the clinic’s annual budget. They will continue to raise funds for the clinic through donations, and are hoping to get sponsors per kilometer to increase the steaks. We are making a feature length documentary on the 4 travelers as they prepare to start the journey, make their way through mental and physical obstacles, travel across North America and into Central America, and finally reach their destination to give the clinic the funds it needs to continue it’s amazing work. Please visit their website to take in depth look at what the trip is. If you would like to donate to the clinic, give a per kilometer sponsorship, or help to fund the documentary we are planning to make about these 4 amazing individuals and the adventure they are about to set out on, you can contact the travelers …

Accredited Health Care Career Study Opportunities

Study opportunities inside the industry of health care give students the knowledge to step inside a wide breadth of careers. Students can decide on an area of study once they research program possibilities.

Education can be completed at many colleges across the country giving students the skills they need for this fast growing field. The field is focused on treating and preventing illness by providing the public with a variety of services offered by health care facilities. Students can work through programs from the associate’s to doctorate’s degree level of training. The area of study determines what degree levels are offered. Some educational areas may only offer undergraduate training and others may offer all educational levels. To determine what opportunities exist students should research their area of interest.

The field is broad and students can complete programs inside concentration areas that include:

*Physician Assistant

This study opportunity prepares students to correctly diagnose and treat patients while under the direct supervision of a physician. Students can enter several areas like cardiology and orthopedics by completing programs tailored to one area of the health care field. Education centers on understanding how to work with patients by examining them and creating a workable treatment plan. Students should also expect to learn to perform everyday administrative tasks and medical research. Areas of study will include pharmacology, patient assessment, surgery, evidence-based medicine, anatomy, and immunology.

*Health Education

The process of teaching people how to become and stay healthy is covered inside health education degree programs. This field is continuing to grow in popularity, as people in today’s society become more health oriented. Training is centered on teaching students to understand the complete process of designing, implementing, and assessing health programs throughout different communities. Programs can be about a wide range of topics relating to health and wellness. For example, professionals can implement a nutrition, exercise, or health-screening program. Through focused courses students learn the practices of evaluating the communities needs in which they work. Educational courses include topics on alcohol, behavior, health psychology, community health, and stress management. Most professionals work inside local hospitals and clinics where they are accessible to the entire community.

*Surgical Assisting

Associates degree programs teach students to be an important member of the surgical staff at a hospital. Students explore the procedures used inside an operating room to learn how to create a sterile environment and assist surgeons during surgery. This includes operating suction devices, diagnostic tools, and supplies. Students also learn to know what types of instruments go with different surgeries, which helps them understand how to anticipate the surgeon’s moves. Subjects studied typically include courses in microbiology, medical terminology, and human anatomy.

Other educational training options include working through programs in cardiovascular technology, preventive medicine, and public health. Educational training in health care is essential when pursuing a career. Students can obtain accredited health care degrees by pursuing their interests and completing programs. Full accreditation is provided by agencies such as the Accrediting Bureau of Health Education Schools (ABHES) to training programs that meet all criteria and offer a quality education.

(PRWEB) October 11, 2004

In a time when resources are scarce and problems are many, professionals are choosing evidence-based practices to improve outcomes related to services. Evidence is emerging that school-based mental health services are an effective and cost efficient way to improve school performance and mental health and reduce behavioral problems. To assess the effectiveness of school based mental health (SBMH) services to provide these outcomes in students from Pre-K – 12th grades, Robert Schmidt, MA and Kathryn Seifert, Ph.D. collaborated on the evaluation of outcomes for a SBMH program for a mid-Atlantic rural school district.

The project began in 1999 after a Federal grant was awarded to the school district. The children’s scores on the Devereaux, BASC, CARE and several school measures such as absenteeism, disciplinary referrals, and suspensions were measured from the beginning of services and at the beginning and end of each school year. Youth were referred to the project from teachers, guidance counselors, parents, student self-referrals and other agencies such as the Departments of Social Services and Juvenile Services of which resulted in 1,247 SBMH referrals during a five-year period.

From 1999 to 2004, 36% of these students were referred because of symptoms of depression, 26% because of family problems, and 24% because of behavior problems. There were 84 referrals to the program in 1999, compared to 437 students in 2002 and 239 students in 2003. Peak referral times were consistently observed during the months of October and February. Youth in the transition years of sixth and ninth grades were referred to the program most often. More Caucasian females participated in the project than any other ethnic/gender group. In 2000, 2,132 mental health sessions were provided, in contrast to an amazing 15,763 sessions during the 2003/04 school year.

A group of one hundred thirty-two students who participated in the program showed significantly improved attitudes toward teachers and school, decreased mental health symptoms, and increased self-esteem after one year of services. From the 2001 to the 2002 school year, students participating in SBMH had significantly improved school attendance (from approximately 4600 to 4200 days absent). One hundred seventy-eight students had a significant (49%) decrease in disciplinary referrals and violence related disciplinary referrals from the 2001 to the 2002 school year. One hundred thirty-four participants had a significant decrease (54%) in suspensions from school. Parents of 103 students reported that their children were having significantly fewer problems after receiving services. Ninety-nine youth self-reported significantly improved commitment to school, interpersonal relationships and self-esteem, as well as fewer stress related problems. Two hundred fifty students reported significantly reduced school maladjustment and clinical maladjustment and improved attitudes toward parents and emotional well-being.

This project demonstrated that school based mental health services improved student well-being, behavior and school success, while showing a significant decrease in the initial presenting mental health symptoms, violence and other behavior problems at home and at school. Although these services and study enter into it?s sixth year and is on-going, other school-based mental health services must be provided, expanded, and studied. This project provides a framework for improved student health/success and decreased school violence while positively enhancing the community of which we live, work and play.

(PRWEB) September 9, 2004

The NYU Child Study Center, Project Liberty and Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) are proud to announce the release of Healthy Kids, Happy Futures, a pediatric education campaign. With support from Project Liberty, the program aims to assist pediatricians in becoming more proficient in identifying signs of trauma and other mental health problems in children and adolescents directly affected by the events of September 11, 2001. The program will provide educational materials and outreach activities for pediatricians in the New York metropolitan area to help identify children and adolescents at risk for Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD), anxiety and disruptive behavior disorders and depression.

“We are extremely thankful to Project Liberty for recognizing the importance of such a program and providing the funding to allow us create this valuable educational program,” said Harold S. Koplewicz, M.D., director of the Child Study Center. “We know that pediatricians are the first line of defense to identify potential mental health problems in young people. This program will help New York area pediatricians to more easily recognize warning signs in their patients and to provide earlier intervention and treatment.”

Healthy Kids, Happy Futures will provide a series of public education sessions for pediatricians. These sessions will focus on a variety of topics including: short-term psychological responses to trauma, anxiety, depression, and grief; the course of recovery for most children; and how reactions are different based on the child’s development and environment. In addition, a team of outreach workers will schedule appointments with metropolitan New York area pediatricians to provide in-office education for recognizing signs of PTSD, anxiety and depression as well as supply educational materials for parents and families.

“The Institute for Trauma and Stress at the NYU Child Study Center has done a wonderful job of promoting awareness of the psychological, social and biological impact of trauma on childhood development,” said Lloyd I. Sederer, M.D., Executive Deputy Commissioner of Mental Hygiene for the New York City Department of Health and Mental Hygiene. “We hope this collaboration will allow the Center to expand its education and outreach initiatives related to the effects of 9/11.”

Project Liberty is a program that provides public education, outreach and free crisis counseling services to persons, families and groups most affected by the World Trade Center disaster. Project Liberty is supported by a grant from the Federal Emergency Management Agency with the support of the Center for Mental Health Services. The program is administered by the New York State Office of Mental Health. For more information please call 1-800-LIFENET or 1-800-543-3638 or visit http://www.projectliberty.state.ny.us/
