HANDS,which work round the clock for the flood affected people of PAKISTAN

HANDS is one of the largest NGO of country having strong roots in the community and works in most of the districts of Sindh & Baluchistan. HANDS is currently working in 18 districts of Sindh and in Jafferabad & Quetta in Baluchistan since many years and has its regional offices at all places. HANDS has more than 1000 staff and about 100,000 volunteers available. HANDS has developed and established strong Community Base Organizations and their Net-works in all these districts. HANDS has extensive experience of working for emergency response in many times  like Cyclone in Thatta & Badin (1999) and in Balochistan (2003), Cyclone in Badin (2003), Earthquake in Northern area & Kashmir (2005), floods in many districts of Sindh in the last 10 years etc.  HANDS worked in emergency response, rescue and relief, and also further in rehabilitation of the affected families. HANDS mobilized its all possible resources including HR, logistics and financial resources, with the collaboration of district/ provincial government and community organizations or their net-works. HANDS has been working in Health, Education, Poverty Alleviation, Capacity Development and Research since 1993. It has also implemented many initiatives, through Public private partnership particularly in Health and Education sectors, including strengthening of the Public sector facilities in delivery of services through capacity building of their staff, reactivation & strengthening of Community organizations through capacity building of their members.The shocking flood in SINDH Province has roughly disturbed human lives, belongings cum chattels. Torhi Bund committed a breach inundated the substantial area of Sukkur, Kashmore- Kandhkot, Jacobabad and Shikarpur districts resulted absolute devastation of many towns, thousands of villages and settlements, standing crops, basic infrastructure and which happened dislocation of the thousand poor people of affected districts. In the consequence of the calamitous circumstances of the people of above districts and people from Ghotki, Sukkur, Khairpur and Kandhkot, Jacobabad are put out of place the most up-to-date measurement of the flood situation. HANDS has weighed up the basic needs of these affected communities through repaid assessment and HANDS is also part of rapid Assessment by UNOCHA for 19 districts of Sindh. HANDS is among 5th the largest national organization to conduct this assessment within 03 days.

HANDS with collaboration of district governments and local NGOs network have planned rescue and relief work in these districts. HANDS staff and volunteers have rescued more than 129019 persons from the inundated areas.HANDS has established under supervision of Shiekh Tanveer Ahmed (Chief Executive-HANDS) and Mr. Zafar Ali Dehraj (General Manager Disaster-HANDS) two Disaster Response Central Office at HANDS Regional Office one in northern Sindh in Sukkur, and other in sothern Sindh at Thatta under supervision of Sheikh Tanveer Ahmed (CE-HANDS) and Mr.Zafar Ali Dehraj (GM Disaster) and declared 18 regional offices in Sindh and 01 office in Quetta-Baluchistan as Emergency Response Centers. HANDS Liaison office Islamabad is active in mobilization of national & international resources.Moreover HANDS initiated its relief work by providing these IDPs food and safe drinking water and made coordination with other aid agencies for backing of flood affected people. HANDS has been operating an emergency relief program round the clock since August 07, 2010 but there is even now. Severe scarcity of food, shelter, clean water, sanitation, and health and hygiene materials needed for hundreds of thousands affected people, who lost everything in their devasted homes and the numbers are being made bigger as the flood water is surging downwards, impinge on many new areas of district Larkana, Kamber-Shahdadkot, Dadu and Jamshoro. Where as HANDS have established 100 relief campsin district Sukkur, Shikarpur, Kashmore & Jacobabad districts. HANDS also planned establishment of many more relief camps in different Schools and Tent cities within couple of days. Till now 2630 families have been provided shelter to displaced people of flood.And the duration of this period of relief operation HANDS has provided cooked and uncooked food to 178407 peoples  respectively, safe drinking water through tankers, and installation of critical infrastructure (i.e. Hand pumps, pit latrines and shelters) at relief camps.

HANDS has treated approximately 73131 OPD patients through mobile camp and Fixed Medical Camp services for the flood flood affected people in order to provide the medical services to the sick, and injured including preventive vaccination for different viral, fungal, bacterial and other diseases. and also conducted health & hygiene sessions with the affected communities in the relief camps of Sukkur, Khairpur and Shikarpur districts. HANDS not only work  in flood affected area but also provide health facilities in other district of SINDH as in District Karachi (Rural) where HANDS CDG Hospital providing the facility of OPD, LAB, Ultrasound, Ambulance etc Services in all 100 camps of flood affected peoples. For live stock HANDS is working on vaccination and treatment arrangements and total service for livestock in de-worming, vaccination and treatment totaled 1839 animals. Fodder for animals’ distribution has been started on daily basis for surviving.  For safe drinking water and sanitation HANDS provide to all camps through water connections, water tankers, hand pump and tab water and clean water has been provided to 178407 people till now.As we know that Latrine facility is very important for these camp sites where a lot of peoples living in one shelter so from sanitation point of view 106 latrines have been constructed as far which are benefiting 178407 peoples in district Khairpur, Kashmore-Kandhkot, jacoabad, shikarpur, Dadu, Thatta and Sukkur, and Relief camps established by HANDS in the above districts in collaboration with Care international, Medicos international, PPAF Engro, Goal and UNICEF.HANDS is also sharing out uncooked food for affected people 2630 households in the five districts in collaboration with Care international, Medicos international, PPAF Engro , Goal and UNICEF. HANDS along with partners has provided relief material to almost 178407 affected peoples of district Ghotki, Sukkur, Khairpur and Kandhkot, Jacobabad and the package for these affected people consists of raw food items, safe drinking water, sanitation, shelter sheets and the hygiene kit.  A project of  WASH for flood affected people” has been started where Hand Pumps, Hygiene kits will be provided and sessions of the affected communities will be conducted in order to aware those regarding health and hygiene issues.  HANDS is also working on the strategy of pooling resources with different national and international aid agencies in order to maximize the relief operation efficiency and is ready to provide in-kind support and facilitate the relief operation being carried out by other organizations working for the flood affected people in HANDS operational area, The international agencies willing for collaboration with international and national organizations. HANDS is holding discussion regarding need assessment, areas of intervention, geographical locations, implementation plan, monitoring & reporting and audit matters for different relief projects.
