Treating a Herniated Disc – Help Needed?

Question by Dave: Treating a Herniated Disc – Help Needed?
L4 & L5 herniated (one more than the other)- about 1 year ago. Does anyone recommend ANYTHING? E.g., excercises AND/OR “Spinal Decompression?”- read mixed reviews. Had an epidural- seemed to help- DID NOT get 3 as the Dr. suggested (I read about bad long term side effects- dirty drugs). It’s been about a year now- possibly improving “slightly” (milestones of slight improvement observed every 6 months but can’t see improvements day to day or even month to month). It seems like it is taking forever (about a year). The Dr. DID NOT seem to think surgery was the solution- able to walk on the treadmill 30 minutes a day without major issues which he said is already considered a success (even if surgery had been done). Once it passes a certain point of time while on the treadmill, it almost clicks and the pain goes 100% away! very strange (why does this happen?) If no time for walking in the am, all day it’s kind of nagging. The only things that seem to help are NSAIDS and Walking. Went to PT but that seemed to make it worse and I’ve read where some Dr’s say, core excercises are not always the solution. YOUR HELP AND SUGGESTIONS ARE GREATLY APPRECIATED.

Regrettably I can say I know what you are going through and it s***ks big time. Back problems take very long to heal and my dr. told me I have a chance of 1 in 4 to get it again. I did not have a herniated disc but a bulging one of which a piece broke off and landed in my spinal cord. I did do the PT and even though I did think it worked a little bit my PT told me its crucial I always take care of my back because it is and will be a weak point. He recommended a book and that has helped me tremendously. Its called” Treat your own back” by Robin McKenzie.

Its a hands on book that is very easy to read and practical in use. I hope this will help a little bit.

  1. i had a surgical disc decompression about a year ago, i have all the same problems back, it wasnt worth the pain. i am sorry for youre pain, but mine is permanent, i have to take pain meds, give up some of the things i want to do, cause, the pain is almost intollarable if i do something to hurt or straign self. I had learn to deal with it, to accept it.
