What Is This New Stabbing Pain In The Middle Upper Left Side Of My Back?
I have suffered from chronic back pain for three years now. I am 31, not overweight, and did not have an injury! I had disc replacement surgury on L4-5 about a year and a half ago with no success. Discography shows that the L5-S1 is not healthy and may be the cause of continued pain. In the past few months I have developed left leg pain and numbness with very bad hip pain as well. This stabbing in my left side (on the back) has just happened and is just aweful when I wake up in the morning. No position helps! Is this a muscle? I can locate it straight away with my left hand reaching back and it hurts to the touch. Any ideas?

sounds like a pinched nerve, sciatica.
check out the back pain section at mayoclinic.com
It could be a symptom of ulceration from nsaids (ibuprofin, aspirn) or pancreatis or many other things. You should refer it to a doctor.
As you probably know, there are a lot of nerves from all parts of the body going thru the spine. False signals can happen. Medication can sometimes help, sometime not.
This also is where the kidney is located. Your doctor may give a prescription for any possible infection.
With sharp pain like that – you should probably go to a clinic/etc. – today.
.
Your describing Sciatica the pain radiates down from your spine, if youv’e already had surgury it could be scare tissue and they do Root Blocks for that, go to you Ortho again and explain it to him. Also when you sleep at night always have a pillow between your knees or under your knees it take the pressure off your back when sleeping. Good luck
